ISSEY MIYAKE PARFUMS

ISSEY MIYAKE PARFUMS is a collection that was co-developed with Beauté Prestige International (SHISEIDO EMEA) in France. The first fragrance, L’EAU D’ISSEY, was born in 1992. The idea for this scent, whose name means ‘water’, was conceived of by Miyake, who saw water as both the greatest material, as well as the greatest source for inspiration. It has had a remarkable influence upon the world of perfume.

The Miyake Design Studio supervises the creative direction for the fragrance at every stage, from the initial concept to bottle design, naming, graphics, package design, marketing tools, and publicity.

Issey Miyake’s philosophy has never deviated. His goals are to create fragrances that convey a message, to inspire people with hope for a bright future, to present simple yet functional bottle designs that are at once accessible and universal, while never losing a sense of wonder. As with our clothing design, we continue to create new fragrances that are not only pertinent to our lifestyles, but are also founded in pure essentials.

L’EAU D’ISSEY

The most beautiful and the purest fragrance is the scent of clean, clear water. This is the concept that gave rise to the unique fragrance named Issey's water.

Water is the source of life that holds infinite possibilities. It is part of ISSEY MIYAKE’s spirit and an indispensible element to ISSEY MIYAKE’s creative process, from which the fragrance’s name L’EAU D’ISSEY (Issey's water) came.

The name, in both its meaning and pronunciation, draws connections with Odyssey (the Greek epic poem said to be written by Homer about the journey of the wise, brave hero Odysseus), and connotes the start of Issey Miyake's journey into the world of perfumes.

The bottle and package design expresses a beauty that is universal.

One night during his stay in Paris, Issey Miyake saw a full moon rising above the Eiffel Tower. The scene inspired him and became the concept of L'EAU D’ISSEY’s bottle. The bottle’s design is an unadorned cone with a metal neck in matte finish, topped with a crystalline orb, which embodies a beauty that is essential.

L’EAU D’ISSEY PURE

L’EAU D’ISSEY PURE is a fragrance inspired by a drop of water, precious and unique.

Based on the slender, cone-shaped silhouette of the iconic bottle of L’EAU D’ISSEY, the design of L’EAU D’ISSEY PURE’s bottle is a symbol of the crystalline orb on top sliding down to the bottom of the bottle like a drop of water.

L’EAU MAJEURE D’ISSEY

L’EAU MAJEURE D’ISSEY is a fragrance redolent of fresh sea breeze and powerful crashing waves.

The bottle of L’EAU D’ISSEY POUR HOMME is depicted as an object weathered by rushing streams of water. The transparent bottle emphasizing its strong silhouette is reminiscent of sea glass being washed up on shore.

NUIT D’ISSEY

NUIT D’ISSEY is a fragrance that drew inspirations from light piercing through the darkness of night, redolent of a forest in nature bathed in moonlight.

The bottle design of NUI D’ISSEY is based on that of L’EAU D’ISSEY POUR HOMME, integrated with a smoky gradient and hairline finish to express the interplay between light and darkness at night. The shine along the center of the bottle surface is reminiscent of the moonlight reflected on water.

Edition Special Creations Born from Two Encounters

These special edition bottles were created as a homage to two designers to whom Issey Miyake is eternally bound by friendship.

L’EAU D’ISSEY EDITION SHIRO KURAMATA

Shiro Kuramata worked on many store designs after his first ISSEY MIYAKE boutique in 1976. In 1990, when L’EAU D’ISSEY was born, he was asked to create the design for the bottle as a natural extension of his work. Mr. Kuramata, who was a great lover of perfumes, was creative and poetic, but due to the limitations of the mass-production technology at the time, it was impossible to manufacture his design. By 2008 however, thanks to advances in technology, it became possible.

“Mr. Kuramata’s designs always lead us to dream. Working with him was always inspiring.” Issey Miyake

L’EAU D’ISSEY EDITION ETTORE SOTTSASS

Issey Miyake was a great admirer of Sottsass’ work. In 1997, during one of their meetings, Ettore Sottsass drew a perfume bottle for his friend.
In 2009, Issey Miyake wants to celebrate this renowned designer.

The design, features vivid, fluorescent-colored strands intertwining within a slender, oval-shaped transparent-glass bottle. This limited edition bottle was created as he conceived it, with the combination of the body made by advanced traditional glass blowing techniques and plastic strands intertwined within.

“Ettore is a man who embodies the word “freedom”. I can think of no other designer today who shares such a unique vision” Issey Miyake

ISSEY MIYAKE WATCH www.isseymiyake-watch.com

The Watch project has been evolving since 2001, pairing Seiko Instruments Inc. with the creative direction of the Miyake Design Studio. There have been eight designers involved in the project to date, each of whom has created a watch true to the spirit of Issey Miyake, interpreted in their voice. The designers are always faced with the challenge of creating a fresh design, as well as an analogue watch, that will be made in Japan. The designers also create their own package design. The collaborative efforts of the trios comprised of designer, Seiko and the Miyake Design Studio continue to result in beautiful, functional designs, each of which is distinct and affordable.

陰翳 IN-EI Artemide

Issey Miyake’s new project, 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE, confronts the environmental and resource issues we face today, and explores the making things of the future. In this project, with Miyake as the central figure, the project team Reality Lab., founded in 2007, conduct various research and development. Using fabric made from improved recycled polyester fiber and forms developed by applying three-dimensional mathematical principles, the new 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE clothes were born in autumn 2010.

In the development process of the 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE project, attempts to explore design from a broader viewpoint – not just limited to clothing – evolved into the IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE lighting products.

The production of the lighting products involved not only the latest technology, but also the work by human hands. And, at the base of the products’ concept is the traditional Japanese esthetics about the relationship between light and shadow (in-ei). This concept is also represented in Junichiro Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows: “We find beauty not in the thing itself, but in the patterns of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates.” The three-dimensional form concept developed by 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE was used in creating the lampshades, and the original material with excellent shape retention and light transmission qualities was developed.

The IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE lighting products were launched by Italian lighting maker Artemide in April 2012 at Light+Building (Frankfurt) and the Milan Furniture Fair (Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano).

ISSEY MIYAKE EYES

ISSEY MIYAKE is embarking on the ISSEY MIYAKE EYES to showcase a new eyewear series. The essential design points are: being basic; paying attention to detail for their quality and dignity, and being loved for years to come. It is these fundamental and evident elements for making products that ISSEY MIYAKE carefully strives to establish the standard for tomorrow. And what is required to achieve it is assured skills and an accumulated experience. We are pleased to announce that a prominent Japanese eyewear manufacturer KANEKO OPTICAL identifies with our vision and has agreed to work with us on the new project. Through this collaboration, the project has evolved and we will present the “beauty of use”, bringing zest and zeal to people’s daily lives.

ISSEY MIYAKE + KANEKO OPTICAL

ISSEY MIYAKE’s eyewear products are also engraved with the manufacturer name, KANEKO OPTICAL. In charge of development and production for the project, it is the partner that designer Yusuke Takahashi himself nominated, and is an eyewear manufacturer that does everything from the planning to the sales of eyewear products.
Takahashi comments, “I am surprised to see how perfectly ISSEY MIYAKE’s respect for domestic high quality craftsmanship and KANEKO OPTICAL’s strong motivation for product development integrate together. The images and designs that we envisioned are precisely embodied into the products thanks to KANEKO OPTICAL’s own method and accumulated expertise both in design and production of eyewear”.
